Government issues 60-days ultimatum on illegal foreign workers

Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Francis Matiang’i has announced that the government will crack down on illegal foreign workers in 60 days. Speaking during a Parliamentary Security Committee meeting in Shanzu, Mombasa, Dr. Matiang’i said that the government will issue electronic work permit cards to all eligible foreign workers in Kenya within the next 60 days, after which the crackdown will commence.

According to Dr. Matiang’i, there are more than 100,000 foreigners working in Kenya, contrary to the 34,000 foreigners in the official records.

“There are people doing jobs Kenyans can do, and they are coming through the backdoor having obtained what they purport to be work permits,” said Dr. Matiang’i.

He also announced that special consideration will be given to missionary doctors and foreign professors hired by Kenyan universities when issuing the new electronic permits.
